How & What to Pack in Your Carry-On

Knowing how to pack a carry-on bag is an essential life skill. Follow this carry-on packing list to ensure your next trip goes as smoothly as possible.

Carry-on packing list:

1. A collapsible water bottle.

When travelling, space is at a premium. A collapsible water bottle will ensure you stay hydrated throughout your trip. In addition, it’ll save you from springing for bottled water if you’re stuck in the terminal for a while.

2. Medication.

If you take daily medications, don’t pack them in your checked luggage. If it’s stolen or lost, you could find yourself in a difficult situation, as getting refills may prove difficult.

3. Chargers.

Your chargers should follow you everywhere you go, no matter how confident you are in your devices’ batteries. Cancelled and delayed flights mean you won’t have access to your checked luggage for a while, and your phone or laptop may prove essential if you need to sort out an emergency.

4. Identification and documents.

Chances are you didn’t pack your passport in your checked baggage. However, you should ensure you have all the documentation relevant to your trip with you at all times, especially if it doesn’t have a digital counterpart.

5. Valuables.

There’s no good reason to risk having your valuables stolen from your checked suitcase. Keep them with you at all times.

6. Something to do.

In addition to sitting on a plane for hours, there’s no telling how long you’ll spend in the terminal. Make sure you have something to help you pass the time. Books and magazines are good options, as are e-readers. Bulky hardcover volumes are better left at home, as they take up a lot of precious space.

7. A change of clothes.

A pair of underwear and an outfit that’s appropriate for your destination are must-haves.

8. Toiletries.

Having the option to freshen up when you arrive at your destination will make you feel a lot better. A toothbrush, a small, plane-safe container of toothpaste and facial wipes are all you need.

9. Snacks.

If you rely on airport food and complementary pretzels to see you through to your destination, chances are you won’t have a great experience. Packing healthy snacks is always a good idea.
