Travelling to the Toronto Island Airport just got a lot easier with construction completed on new pedestrian tunnel. Travellers can now walk directly from Billy Bishop Airport into the city. That means a faster commute for travellers entering or leaving the city, and reduced lineups and waiting times for the short ferry-ride to the airport. In March 2012, construction began on the 853-foot long pedestrian tunnel. It is built under Lake Ontario’s Western Channel, and serves to connect mainland Toronto to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The tunnel opened to the public at the end of July 2015 and has since been enjoyed by locals and visitors travelling in and out of the city. Going forward, it is expected to serve over 2.4 million passengers each year.
To take the tunnel, you must descend 100 feet and walk along a corridor with four moving sidewalks. Headed towards the airport, at the south end of the tunnel, travellers will take one of Canada’s longest escalator systems to reach the check-in area of the airport. From the mainland to the island, the journey takes approximately six minutes or less, depending on how fast you are moving and how much luggage you have to carry
In addition to providing travellers with reliable and quick access to the airport, it also makes it easier to arrive in the city and get to the heart of Toronto. The tunnel will get you to the city, but reaching the CN Tower and other popular landmarks or central areas will take a 20 minute walk or longer, depending on your destination.
